Federico Macheda rescued Manchester United's Premier League title defence for the second straight match on Saturday, clinching a 2-1 victory at Sunderland with his first touch after coming off the bench.
Macheda's deflected goal in the 76th minute left United a point ahead of Liverpool, which eased to a 4-0 victory over Blackburn.
Last weekend, the 17-year-old Italian scored a late winner to give United a 3-2 victory over Aston Villa.
Paul Scholes had put United ahead after 19 minutes, but the 34-year-old midfielder's header was canceled out by Kenwyne Jones in the 55th.
United, which still has a game in hand, tops the league with 71 points. -- AP
