Neville signs new contract

Gary Neville has agreed a new contract with Manchester United, tying him to the club until June 2010. The full-back’s current deal expires in the summer but he now follows in the footsteps of Ryan Giggs, who signed a one-year extension last week.

“Manchester United is the only club I have ever wanted to play for so I am delighted to have signed for another year,” said the 33-year-old Neville, who made his debut for his boyhood club in 1992.

The right-back is not expected to play beyond 2010 having fallen behind the Brazilian Rafael in the pecking order. Despite this, Sir Alex Ferguson remains full of praise for the player. “Gary is a true professional and I admire how he has overcome an injury which kept him out for over a year, returning as good as ever,” he said. “He deserves this new contract and we are very happy to have him here.”
